Wiring does not last forever. If your home's electrics are decades old, a full or partial rewire is often the safest long-term fix.
Common signs include old rubber, lead or fabric covered cables, round pin sockets, brown or black switches, flickering lights, sockets that feel warm, a burning smell and a fuse board that trips regularly. Too few sockets, with extension leads everywhere, is another clue the system was never designed for modern living. If your home has not been rewired in 25 to 30 years, it is worth getting it inspected.
A full rewire replaces all the cables, sockets, switches and usually the consumer unit, and is best done when a house is empty or being renovated. A partial rewire targets specific circuits or rooms, such as a kitchen, an extension or an older part of the house, while keeping wiring that is still in good condition. An electrical inspection will tell you which is right for your home.
Northern Ireland has a large number of older homes, from Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Belfast to farmhouses and cottages in the countryside. In Belfast, streets around the Lisburn Road, the Ormeau Road and East Belfast are full of homes where wiring has been patched over many years. In Lisburn, older city centre houses and early estates are now reaching the age where a rewire makes sense.
A typical three bedroom house takes several days to rewire. The electrician will lift some floorboards and chase cables into walls, so it is best planned before decorating. Once complete, everything is tested and you receive an electrical installation certificate.
