EV Charging Point Installation in Northern Ireland: Everything You Need to Know

Electric cars are becoming a familiar sight on roads across Northern Ireland, from the Westlink in Belfast to the M1 through Lisburn and beyond. If you have made the switch or are thinking about it, a home charging point is one of the best investments you can make. This guide explains what an EV charging point installation in Northern Ireland involves, what it typically costs, the grants available and how to get it done safely.

Why charge at home?

Public chargers are useful on longer journeys, but most EV drivers do the majority of their charging at home. A dedicated home charger is much faster than a standard three pin plug, which is not designed for long, heavy loads. Plugging in overnight means you wake up to a full battery, and many energy suppliers in Northern Ireland offer off-peak or economy tariffs that make overnight charging far cheaper than buying petrol or diesel.

Smart chargers also let you schedule charging, track usage and take advantage of the cheapest times, all from an app on your phone.

The OZEV grant scheme

The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles, known as OZEV, runs the EV chargepoint grant across the UK, including Northern Ireland. The scheme has changed over the years. It is now aimed mainly at people who rent their home and at people who own or rent a flat, rather than owner occupiers living in houses with a driveway. Landlords and businesses can also apply for separate workplace and residential schemes.

Eligibility rules and grant amounts change from time to time, so always check the latest details on GOV.UK or ask your installer to confirm what applies to you before you book. An approved installer will usually handle the grant application for you.

How much does a home charger cost in NI?

As a rough guide, a standard home EV charger supplied and fitted in Northern Ireland typically costs somewhere between £800 and £1,200 in 2026. Prices vary depending on the charger brand, features and the installation itself. Things that can increase the cost include:

  • A long cable run from the consumer unit to where you park
  • An older fuse board that needs upgrading before the charger can be added
  • Groundwork or ducting to reach a detached garage or driveway
  • Upgrades to the main earthing arrangement
  • Premium chargers with tethered cables, solar integration or extra smart features

These figures are indicative only. Your electrician will give you a fixed quote once they have seen your property.

The installation process

Most installations follow the same steps. First, the electrician carries out a survey, often using photos you send, to check your supply, fuse board and the best location for the charger. They will make sure your home can handle the extra load, and in some cases notify the local network operator, NIE Networks.

On the day, the charger is mounted on an outside wall or post, wired back to its own dedicated, protected circuit and set up with the app. Everything is then tested and certified. A standard install usually takes around half a day.

Compatible vehicles

Most home chargers in the UK and Ireland use a Type 2 connector, which works with the vast majority of electric and plug-in hybrid cars, including models from Tesla, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai, Volkswagen, BMW, MG, Renault, Peugeot and Audi. If you drive an older model with a different connector, an untethered charger with the right cable usually solves the problem.

EV chargers in Belfast and Lisburn

Demand for home chargers is growing fastest around Belfast and Lisburn, especially in newer developments where driveways make installation simple. In older Belfast terraces without off-street parking, options are more limited, and it is worth asking about on-street charging plans from the council. For homes in the Lagan Valley and around Lisburn, longer cable runs to driveways and garages are common, so a proper survey is important.
